Kenya
Kenya is where the safari began, and it still sets the standard: open savannah in the Maasai Mara, elephants against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro in Amboseli, and conservancies where wildlife viewing happens in small vehicles, often with no other vehicle in sight.
July – October for the Great MigrationDiscoverUnwind
A Kenyan safari is a study in logistics done quietly well. Light-aircraft flights link the reserves, camps are small, and days follow the animals' rhythm — out at dawn, rest in the heat of the day, out again in the late afternoon. Getting those connections and camp choices right is most of what an advisor does here.
When to go: The Great Migration is in the Maasai Mara roughly from July to October, when the herds arrive from the Serengeti; the dry months either side of it also offer clear, reliable game viewing.
Highlights
- The Maasai Mara, Kenya's flagship reserve, known for big cats and, in season, the Great Migration herds and river crossings
- Amboseli National Park, where large elephant herds move across open plains beneath Mount Kilimanjaro
- Private conservancies bordering the Mara, which allow night drives and off-road viewing with far fewer vehicles
- Laikipia and the northern reserves, including Samburu, for species found nowhere further south, such as Grevy's zebra and reticulated giraffe
- Nairobi itself — most safaris begin here, and the Nairobi National Park offers game viewing against a city skyline

Honest answers
What does a Kenya safari cost?
A safari is one of the more cost-intensive ways to travel, and it helps to know why. The drivers are the camp itself — small, remote camps with expert guides cost more to run than a city hotel — the season, with Migration months in highest demand, and the internal flights that link the reserves. Park and conservancy fees, which support the wildlife areas you are visiting, are a real and itemised part of the total your advisor will quote.
Why do two safaris of the same length differ so much in price?
Usually because of what is included and how private the experience is. One itinerary may include internal flights, all game drives in a private vehicle, and conservancy fees, while another covers shared drives and leaves flights and fees to be added later. Comparing headline figures without comparing inclusions is misleading, so your advisor will set the two out side by side before you decide.
Can a safari work for a family, and does that change the cost?
Yes — many camps welcome children and adjust the pace, with family tents and private vehicles so the day can flex around younger travellers. Party size cuts both ways: a private vehicle and guide are a fixed cost shared across the family, while each additional traveller adds their own camp and flight costs. Your advisor will build the version that fits your family and quote it in full.
