Southern Europe · Italy by Rail and River

Italy

Italy resists the single trip. Rome, Florence, and Venice each deserve days rather than hours, the countryside between them — Tuscany, Umbria, the lakes, the Amalfi Coast — is often what travellers remember longest, and the south has a character entirely separate from the north.

A good Italian itinerary therefore does less, more carefully. It chooses a region or two, travels between them at an easy pace by rail or river, and leaves room for the unplanned: a market morning, a family-run trattoria, a church found by turning down the wrong street. The advisor's role is to protect that pace against the temptation to see everything at once.

When to go: Spring and autumn are Italy's sweet spots — warm days, open sites and vineyards, and fewer crowds than in high summer, when cities are hot and at their busiest.

Highlights

  • Rome's ancient core — the Colosseum, the Forum, and the Pantheon — alongside the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica
  • Florence and the Uffizi, with Michelangelo's David at the Accademia, in the city where the Renaissance began
  • Venice by water: St. Mark's Square, the Grand Canal, and the quieter districts away from the day-trip crowds
  • Tuscany's hill towns and wine country, including Siena, San Gimignano, and the Val d'Orcia
  • The Amalfi Coast and Capri, where the road, the sea, and the towns of Positano and Ravello are the experience itself

Honest answers

What does a trip to Italy cost?

It depends on the shape you choose. The main drivers are the season — spring and autumn balance weather against demand, while August is both hot and busy — the class of hotel and its location within each city, and how much private guiding is included. A guided tour, a rail itinerary, and a river cruise will each price the same days differently, and your advisor will quote the real figure for the version you prefer.

Does travelling by rail save money?

Rail changes what you spend on rather than simply reducing it. It removes the cost and effort of driving and parking in historic centres, and first-class advance fares on the main high-speed routes are a sensible place to spend a little more for comfort. What tends to drive the total is still the hotels and the guiding, which your advisor will lay out line by line before you commit.

How does party size affect the price?

Private guiding and private transfers are priced per vehicle or per guide, not per person, so a couple travelling alone carries that whole cost while a small group shares it. Set tours spread those costs across the group, which is one reason they can look simpler on price. Your advisor will show you where sharing — or going private — actually changes your total.
